Reinforcing the T-junction area
Description of the problem
On longwall coal faces the T-junction is the area subjected to the highest rock pressures. This pressure leads to spills of coal on the face and side-walls and other falls of ground. Events of this kind slow the rate of face advance and this in turn tends to accentuate the problem. In order to relieve this situation the zone in question has to be reinforced by strata injection.

Solution
Treatment begins with the drilling of injection holes according to a pre-established pattern as determined by local strata conditions. These holes are usually drilled to a length of 2 to 3 metres into the upper one-third of the coal seam and have a rising gradient to ensure that the injected product is able to migrate into the roof beds.
These holes are fitted with injection tubes and gland seals, through which the product is delivered using a metering pump and mixing gun. Because of its low viscosity properties the two-component mixture is able to penetrate into the smallest cracks and fissures. The high adhesive strength and flexibility developed by the product after polymerisation ensures effective strata cohesion.
