Treating water inflow
Description of the problem
Water inflow into underground mine workings can lead to a whole series of problems.
While this water can often be drained away, it is also necessary under certain circumstances to isolate it by creating an injection barrier.

Two types of injection technique can be used in such cases:
1. Plugging: this injection treatment is designed to counteract major inrush of water which is preventing any further progress at the workplace. In such cases the objective is to reduce the make of water sufficiently to be able to resume the roadheading operation, and not necessarily to stop the inflow completely.
2. Sealing: this injection process is designed to seal all the joints, fissures and other channels through which the water can pass. In this case the aim is to stop all water infiltration completely.
'Plugging' involves the use of a high-expansion water-reactive or two-component foam, such as Marifoam G, Marithan E or Maristop A.
Because of their characteristic properties these products have to be injected ahead of the water inflow point so that they have time to react and stifle the passage of water as the injection process develops. If they are injected too close to the water emergence point they run the risk of being diluted with water before they have time to set properly.
'Sealing' involves the use of low-expansion or non-expanding products such as Marigel or Marithan. After injection these two-component gel products form a completely watertight barrier.
