Description of the problem
Face salvage is always a critical operation. As the face supports are being withdrawn careful monitoring is required to ensure the stability of the local ground (roof and caved waste) and to prevent an outbreak of spontaneous combustion in the goaf

By injecting stowing material behind the line of supports it is possible:
- to create an airtight barrier between the caved waste and the heading
- to reinforce the ribside.
This consolidation process helps to cut down on the amount of mesh-lagging work required and in this way reduces the time needed to prepare the face for salvage. This in turn reduces the cost and degree of risk associated with the operation.
In order to be able to inject the product a number of injection tubes are inserted between the face supports.
The foam is injected until it completely fills the cavities, where it expands into the gaps between the caving debris and sets hard. This creates an airtight barrier and also provides protection from possible falls of ground as the face supports are being withdrawn.
The rapid foaming properties of the product make for targeted treatment, which means a saving in productivity.
This treatment process can also be used to good effect to combat heatings in the goaf, as it can isolate the caved waste to allow the area to be ‘inertised’ with nitrogen.
