Face start-up from an arch-supported roadway
Description of the problem
In order to advance out of the gate road and into the new face line the face supports need to have an abutment at the roof. In such cases the filling operation has to be undertaken as the supports are progressively installed. This filling process must be carried out with sufficient speed so as not to delay the face installation work.

When the face supports are being installed textile bags of an appropriate size are inserted above the canopies and then filled with product as the operation progresses.
The two-component product is delivered by a high-performance metering pump and is pumped into the bags using a mixing gun and flexible injection pipe.
As it emerges from the pipe the product expands and quickly fills the gap between the support canopy and the roadway crown, thereby creating an artificial roof that provides abutment for the face supports to be advanced.
The product can be pumped over a distance of more than 600 metres from the pump to the mixing gun. This allows the pump unit to be set up at a suitable location well away from the workplace, while relieves the new face of unnecessary encumbrances.
The speed of the filling operation, combined with the high expansion rate and mechanical strength of the polymer foam product, which also has excellent anti-fire properties, produces a very simple, economic and efficient filling system.
