Goaf isolation
Description of the problem
The goaf zone is always subject to fire risk. In order to minimise this threat a constant monitoring effort is needed to prevent air, i.e. oxygen, from entering this area.
In certain cases the reverse situation applies and measures have to be put in place to ensure that gas trapped in the goaf does not enter the working areas.
In both cases a gastight stopping has to be created between the goaf and the workings and roadways.

Solution
Strata that have to be sealed to prevent the migration of air and gas are treated by injection. This usually involves highly fractured ground presenting major cavities. The objective is to fill the cavities in order to reduce the permeability of the strata in question.
Treatment begins with the drilling of injection holes according to a pre-set pattern, which is determined by local strata conditions. These holes are then fitted with injection pipes and gland seals, which allow the product to be pumped into the ground using a metering pump and mixing gun.
As it emerges from the gland the product expands to fill the smallest cracks and fissures, where it solidifies and creates a gastight seal.
