Filling cavities caused by roof falls
Description of the problem
Cavities created by falls of ground cause production stoppages and must be filled as quickly as possible in order to prevent more serious problems and to allow coal winning to be resumed with the minimum delay.

The operation commences with the construction of lightweight shuttering; this does not have to be watertight, as product foaming is almost immediate.
The product is delivered from a high-output metering pump and is placed using injection pipes that are directed into the highest point of the cavity.
The product foams and solidifies very quickly as it emerges from the pipe.
The expansion pressure generated by the foam applies a positive force to the strata, which is reinforced as a result.
The high expansion rate of these foaming products ensures rapid filling and means that relatively little filling material has to be transported to the workplace.
Prior to recommencing coal winning it is recommended that a consolidation resin be injected ahead of the collapse in order to complete the reinforcement of the affected area.
